NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) recognise a candidate's competence in specified areas of work - that is their ability and skill in performing the tasks required. This is demonstrated through their compiled evidence within a portfolio, supported by observations from a qualified assessor at the work place. Evidence must show that the candidate understands why they do what they do and that they have attained a level of underpinning knowledge that supports their work.
VRQs (Vocationally Related Qualifications) focus more on assessing and recognising a candidate's knowledge and understanding. They are delivered through a taught programme and have a work placement running alongside - this gives each candidate an opportunity to use what they are learning and continually develop their skills as they work through the programme. To achieve a VRQ a candidate is required to complete a series of set tasks and exercises that will help demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.
