Being on a calorie restricted diet does not have to mean eating less food (phew!), it means making the right choices, and loading up on those low calorie foods. Gorge on the following foods and stay under budget with your calories!


The ultimate superfood! Pack your plate with this leafy green for less than 50 calories per large serving and you will also be topping up on some important vitamins and minerals. Calorie for calorie, kale has more iron than beef and more calcium than milk, and tonnes of cancer fighting vitamin k.


At only 30 calories per 100g, and lots of health benefits start adding more cauliflower to your meals. Although it tastes great cooked the traditional way, be creative with it. Mashed cauliflower makes for a great substitute for mashed potato. You will be using about a third of the calories without missing out on taste. If you are feeling even more creative, try a cauliflower base pizza!

White Meat and Fish

Protein is essential in our diets and lean white meat and fish is the most calorie conscious way of getting it in. Chicken is a winner for muscle building and recovery. Cod is one of the most widely available fish and is low calorie, just skip the batter! Always choose local and organic where possible.

Black Rice

This clever little grain has fewer calories than brown or white rice with lots of added health benefits. It is loaded with vitamin E and has more antioxidants than blueberries!


100g of cucumber will only knock 10 calories of your daily intake so you can afford to eat as much of this as you want. It makes for an easy snack, or bulks out your salads. The high water and fibre content in cucumbers are very effective in ridding the body of toxins from the digestive system, aiding digestion. It is also loaded with vitamin C so can help with fat oxidation.
