MATT ROBERTS IN ASSOCIATION WITH SQUARE MILE

Square Mile has partnered with Matt Roberts Personal Training to offer readers the latest innovations and insights into the world of health and fitness. Whether those city lunches are proving too tempting or you are running your first marathon, the latest health and fitness advice will be covered.

I am back from a very enjoyable whistlestop tour to Dubai. People seemed receptive to the book, GetRunning, and we got some great coverage in the media – I took one journalist running at about 7:00am (an early start!) and co-hosted a couple of TV and radio shows!

So spring is really here, especially now the clocks have gone forward and the days are longer. It is a great time to put the remote control down and get out on your bike or put those running shoes on. In this weather there is no excuse not to be getting a few 20-minute workouts into your week – try cycling to the station or jogging on your lunch break.

For those of you running the London Marathon it is just around the corner and the end is almost in sight. Whilst I am not competing this year – it is one of the rare occasions that I am not – I know how important it is to keep up with your training. You must plan the run on the day; little things like getting to and from the race and where on the circuit you will see friends and family are worth thinking about. Hydration is important so factor that in too.

There are few races across the world that create the buzz of the London Marathon. People run for all sorts of causes and some of the stories are heart-wrenching. If you have not run it before, you will be blown away by the atmosphere. Try to take some time to savour the moment because it is an experience like few others.

On a different note, our new 'Training with You' service is going well – you might have seen the posts on our Facebook page. It is a new national service where our trainers go to people’s homes to train 2–8 women on a 6-week course. It is great for brides to be, new mums, or just making it that bit easier to get in the bikini. The press have been receptive to the idea and soon we will be putting a group from Brides magazine through their paces.

Finally, I would like to wish you all a very good Easter.

Training can become very repetitive and this can lead to staleness, boredom and often a loss of motivation. Frequently, subtle changes can create a whole new programme and give people the inspiration they need to carry on.

Matt shares his secrets to help people get great results.

GO BAREFOOT...
Wearing no shoes or buying a minimal shoe can have a massive effect on your training. Whilst it is not necessarily for everyone or those who run long distances, being barefoot allows the foot and ankle to work unimpaired so, through exercises like walking lunges or low level running, they naturally develop strength and stability in those areas.

INTENSITY AHEAD OF VOLUME...

The more efficient the training, the better the results; the greater intensity of the training, the fitter the person will become along with their ability to do more.

By mixing periods of high intensive work with short periods at a slower pace, known as interval training, people’s training becomes more efficient and so they become fitter. It can be the kick-start many of us need.

TURN THE SESSION UPSIDE DOWN...

There are times when someone’s training can get stuck in a rut. Turning the programme on its head can usually give a different emphasis and reinvigorate the individual. For example, if stretching frequently finishes a session, why not think about moving it to the start and incorporate more flexibility work into the schedule? If abdominal work ends the session, why not place it at the start and activate your core muscles earlier ready for the hour ahead.

Matt concludes: “With all these methods you can revolutionise your workout. These ideas should give your workout a much-needed kick with enough subtle variation to mix things up and keep you interested.”
