This is a quick hello from me before I fly off to Dubai for the Literature Festival to promote Get Running. Coupled with talks and interviews, I will be campaigning in a local school about the importance of staying fit and healthy.

I am genuinely concerned about the obesity epidemic within this country, and I often discuss it with the Prime Minister during our sessions. People are generally unaware of how unfit they are so are making the wrong lifestyle choices. I want to create a way to help people understand this better and make more informed decisions about their lives.

The Fat Bankers competition, run by the team in the City, started for this very reason. Two overweight bankers go head to head to see who can lose the most weight in 12 weeks.

Previously the results have been fantastic, and all achieved through regular exercises and changes to their diet. Rob, one of this year’s contestants, has written a blog so you can keep up to date on the latest news.

On that note, with summer looming just around the corner, why not take advantage of our specialist exercise packages. From weight loss to muscle building, we have something to suit everyone. Visit our website for more information.

Finally, well done to the Hampstead team who competed in the Vertical Challenge at Tower 42. Over £750 was raised for the charity, Shelter – thanks to everyone who donated too.

Most women spend their time doing cardiovascular exercise when actually weight training can be more beneficial. Research has found that it is not only good for strength but also fat loss and improved health.

Whatever the reasons for avoiding the weight, there are plenty of reasons why it should be your top priority.

LOSE BODY FAT
Strength training helps reduce body fat and increase lean weight. Studies show that the average woman who trains two/three times a week for a couple of months will gain 2 pounds of muscle and lose 3.5 pounds of fat. Muscle burns more calories when resting and therefore enhances the metabolism.

TRAIN LIKE A MAN
A programme will look to build a balanced physique based around simple movements like a squat, single leg exercises, and push and pull ups. They will be varied depending on your fitness levels and, of course, using the appropriate weights. Initially, mastering body weight is vital and this is the key for most beginners.

HIGH INTENSITY OR HIGH LOAD TRAINING
Intensity is the driving force for most training programmes. Women are often encouraged to use limited resistance, such as light dumbbells, in their strength exercises but actually this is pointless for achieving progression and long-term results. The weights do not have to be heavy but they need to offer a certain level of resistance.
